The North American fur trade, driven by the European fashion trend of beaver fur hats, created a boom in companies of trappers and traders tending traplines all across the North American continent. These men were tough, rugged and resourceful. While plying their trade, they were also opening up the map, discovering landscapes never before seen by white men and laying out the blueprint for future expansion.
William Henry Ashley journaled what life was like for the trapper/traders. You can read his journal at https://user.xmission.com/~drudy/mtman/html/ashintro.html.
